Tarot of Love
The Tarot is a wonderful system, which may seem daunting at first. Do not fear these cards, for they only speak of life. If you are reading this, you most certainly have enough life experience to read, resonate and understand the cards from your level of perception.
A Brief Introduction to the Tarot Deck:
The Tarot contains 22 Trump Cards also called the Major Arcana. These 22 cards talk about the archetypes one encounters within the journey of the psyche. You have surely encountered each of these cards within your life as archetypes in some way or another, so, if at first the cards seem perplexing, rely and breathe into your experience of life and you will come to embrace their meaning with clarity.
Then there are 56 minor cards. The Minor Arcana contains four suits which correspond to the four elements:
- wands for fire
- pentacles for earth
- swords for air
- cups for water
Each of these suits contains 14 cards.
For now, let’s just look at five cards which may come up as you pursue questions related to love and partnership:

The Sun
in a Love Reading
The Sun represents radiance, brilliance and the warmth associated with the energy center of the Sun (Solar Plexus). When this card appears with regard to a relationship or love-related question, you may expect to experience the haze that accompanies perfect alignment, the freshness of first love, and the overall healing associated with such intense, valuable and wondrously warm experiences of life. The Sun is also associated with innocence, and desire free of expectations or grounding with the status quo requirements of society. When the Sun card appears for you, enjoy it, bask in the pleasure. Although simple, this card truly is one of the strongest in the Tarot. Like true love, the Sun somehow needs little explanation. Try not to over think, and enjoy the Sun’s brilliance, haze, sparkle and shine. Too often we get caught up in what others expect of us, what the world expects of us, but this card reminds us of love without expectations. The Sun is true love at its best, free of materiality and benchmarks often put in place by loveless institutions.
The Empress
in a Love Reading
The Empress is a positive card for love, as the card represents abundance, universality and love in all things, within, through and beyond. The Empress signifies love for all, and the reproductive side of love which invites family. When this card surfaces, expect to experience the kind of love which will grow and influence the world around you. This is a love that is meant to experience life in full, and holistically (not in parts). Don’t be petty, or occupied with small things. The Empress, although also self-caring, does not turn her love inward or create a world of simply two lovers enmeshed – she creates a full experience of life, a home, a garden, a family, friends, children. An Empire! When this card appears regarding a relationship question, consider what “Empire” would mean for you and your present love. Or, if you are insecure about your present love, remember an important lesson of the Empress: act from a place of love – because love flows, is contagious and outwardly creates the universe according to your will.
The Lovers
in a Love Reading
The Lovers, of course, is a positive card to draw with regard to love, and usually denotes passion of some kind. But, there is a deeper meaning to this card which is more helpful than this surface meaning of passion. The Lovers is the embodiment of the law of action-reaction: every action has an equal and opposite reaction. When the Lovers appears, you have entered a union where you are in “sync” with another and your actions together not only dance on their own with your partner but create a reaction within the world at large. In general, though, this card denotes passion that is in sync, where two together dance within the cosmic tides of the universe. A beautiful card to pull, of course, when your question is about love.
The Star
in a Love reading
The Star represents healing of a divine and profound nature, so much so that you arrive shining, full of life and ready to accept all the gifts, joys, rewards and accolades owed to you. Think of the Star as the renewed energy you may feel upon leaving a spa – you have taken time to heal, rest, replenish and you enter the world refreshed, ready, fused, charged, and alive with intention to tackle and prepare to graciously triumph over life’s challenges. With regard to a relationship reading, the Star signifies that a period of healing has taken place, and that you are ready to shine, be loved, and will not use the games of those fearing abandonment to negotiate partnerships. You will be even-tempered, giving, willing to receive and emphatically ready to shine, glow and love.
The Two of Cups
in a Love Reading
The Two of Cups is about giving, receiving, and the divine interplay of giving/receiving when courtship has just commenced. The Two of Cups represents Venus in the sign of Cancer, and speaks of the water element in relationship to love. Think of water flowing endlessly between two cups as if a fountain in the middle of a very peaceful garden. This is a very nurturing card, which often signifies some learning will take place, and a healing on a soul level. This card is very peaceful, and denotes the calmer aspects of love, when things flow, are easy-breezy and even the slightest touch can charm you. You are both on the same wavelength. Although usually the Two of Cups signifies early and young romance full of promise, this card may also represent an ongoing union of mutual respect, flow and compassionate understanding of the other – but with the spark of romance and fun! A very welcome card in any relationship reading.
