Your Ruling Planet
Beyond Your Sun
Part 1
Many people know their sun sign (that is what constellation the Sun is within when you are born) – but not everyone pays attention to the planet associated with or corresponding to their sun sign.
Because we are living enmeshed within our solar system, it is quite important to pay attention to the ruling planet of your sun sign, as this will allow you to understand the influence your planet’s current, past and future movement has on your life.

The Sun Rules Leo
The Sun is the brightest star from Earth, and thus the sun sign is considered perhaps the most important area of your chart. The Sun rules Leo, and carries within its force the characteristics of this sign – brilliance, show-stopping moments, diva attitudes, and illuminating any murky false hoods into bright light. Sunlight naturally cleanses and destroys bacteria, and the influence of this planet in the chart conveys the same alchemical process – the Sun breaks down any barriers and nurtures through illumination.
The Sun rules the heart in the body, the most important organ. The constellation and according planet of the sun sign is not to be missed, and this is perhaps why most only know the placement of their Sun, as its pull and placement is of utmost importance regarding astrological divination.
The Sun rules Leo, and Leos exhibit the naturally magnetic qualities of this “planet” (Astrology is a geocentric system, so it is considered a “planet” within the astrological chart). Blaring, full of life and optimism – wherever the Sun is, it will definitely affect your life and the world.
If you do not believe in Astrology or remain skeptical to its elaborations, just think about the placement of seasons and the Sun, how differently you feel from Autumn to Winter to Spring to Summer. For the ancients, Astrology was seasonal based, and the climactic changes are represented in each of the planets and their influence. The magnitude of the Sun’s importance can be felt and visualized when you associate its power on a very basic level to the changing seasons.
The Moon Rules Cancer
The Moon is the fastest-moving “planet” and changes signs every couple of days. If you are born under the sun sign Cancer, it is quite important to pay attention to the placement of the Moon. Cancers are known for being quite “moody”. But really, who can blame them when their ruling planet is constantly shifting constellations!
The Moon represents loving, nurturing, divine feminine energy, emotions, instincts and reactions. Where your Moon is placed will represent your emotional life, your deepest intentions, and how you view any strong feminine figures in your life, such as your mother or primary caregiver.
The Moon’s phases are very important to pay attention to: in particular the New Moon each month, the Full Moon, and the “void of course moon”. The void of course moon means when the moon is “between” signs. This usually lasts for a few hours every three days or so. During a void of course moon, it is important to not initiate anything of importance. Conversely, the void of course moon is a great time to make an annoying phone call, send in mail, or do anything to which you do not want any outcome or drama – like sending in bills, calling an ex, and so forth.
The New Moon favors new beginnings, and the Full Moon signifies any areas where you will be able to reap the benefits and rewards of your actions during the New Moon.
Mercury rules Virgo and Gemini
Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun. Because of its distance from earth, Mercury appears to us as a very “fast” moving planet, in that it moves from constellation to constellation (or sign to sign) quite quickly, and takes about a year to circle the Zodiac. Mercury governs communication, social endeavors, intellectual pursuits, language, transportation, and electronics (especially those having to do with data & communication).
Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo and creates a sense of analysis and order tempered within each sign’s specific element of air and earth. If you are Virgo or Gemini, it is quite important to pay attention to what Mercury is doing, as this little guy retrogrades 3-4 times a year. During a Mercury retrograde, it is advised to double-triple check all plans (especially if you travel) and to err on the safe side when making decisions. Famously, you probably know that to sign any contract during Mercury retrograde is a big “no no”. However, if you must sign anything during a retrograde, look VERY carefully at the contract, double-triple check everything, and if possible, make a spreadsheet-like list and analyze the whole shebang from a very objective perspective – do not leave anything to chance!
Another aspect I have found to Mercury retrograde is that we want to make quick, hasty decisions, as if we are drunk on the idea of moving along, getting things done, like a haywire chicken with its head cut off. It is very important during a Mercury retrograde to take things slow, fall into holistic routines like yoga and healthy eating, and use the energy of Mercury retrograde to review past works, or to archive any material. In fact, this is the best use of Mercury retrograde: to backtrack through already “seen” or “known” material and take stock of its effect on your past, present and future. Anything “new” or to be “born” under Mercury retrograde is not a good idea.
Mercury retrograde affects ALL the Zodiac, but for Virgo and Gemini, it is quite important that you take the time to figure out where Mercury falls in your natal chart, and what house the planet will transit when in retrograde, as this area will be particularly affected. Knowing this information will allow you to prepare within this specific area of your life – and to deal with Mercury retrograde smartly. It is all about preparation, do not forget to double-triple check plans!
Mars rules Scorpio and Aries
Mars, the fiery red planet we are promised will be a new home for humanity, is not a very nurturing planet with regard to the Zodiac. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio (some say only Pluto rules Scorpio, but the ancients did not know about Pluto and ascribed solely Mars to Scorpio). Mars is associated traditionally with war, the warrior, courage and victory.
For both Aries (a fire sign) and Scorpio (a water sign) Mars gives them an extra drive, forthrightness and power to subvert the status quo and realize their visions. However, if in a tough aspect (like a square or an opposition) Mars can create havoc for you and be quite unforgiving and rude. If you are or if you know any Aries or Scorpio, you have no doubt seen their anger – and it is quite a sight to behold! Their eyes flash and they can raise their voice to an octave that only promises vengeance and extreme directness.
As those with Mars as their ruling planet evolve, mature and develop, they will come to work with Mars to achieve their goals, using the massive energy of this planet to be very productive in their careers, very well organized and eventually excellent communicators. If you go to a yoga class, you may notice that most of the practitioners are Aries – they need yoga and breathing exercises to properly manifest their energy and will. As a fire sign, Aries represents the action part of Mars, whereas Scorpio represents the emotional side of the red planet, or the scintillating, secretive side of passion.
Mars takes about two years to go around the Zodiac, and when it retrogrades it can stay in one sign for up to seven or eight months. Because Mars can be said to rule the “getting things done” attitude, it is important for every sign to know where this planet is in your natal chart, and what sign it is presently transiting. This will help you realize where you have extra help in your life to achieve your goals, and where you may need special training to direct the intensity and passion of Mars.
